How you know you might need one
- A brown or black spot on a tooth
- Sharpness with cold or sweet things
- Food packing into the same spot every time
- A rough edge your tongue keeps finding
And often, nothing at all. Cavities between teeth are usually found on an x-ray before you feel them, which is the argument for a check-up.
What the appointment is like
We numb the tooth, clean out the decay, and rebuild the tooth. You will be numb for a couple of hours afterwards, so be careful biting your cheek while it wears off.
Sensitivity for a few days after a filling is normal. Pain that gets worse instead of better is not, and you should ring us.
If the cavity is deep
Sometimes decay reaches the nerve, and then a filling is not enough. If that is what we find, we will say so and explain the options, including referring you on if the work is better done by a specialist. We do not start something in the chair that is not right for you.
